This 1,453 square metre family residence is set on a remodelled 1.25 acre east facing hillside site, overlooking the Bel Air Country Club with the downtown Los Angeles skyline in the distance. The clients asked for a glamorous family home surrounded by nature in which to showcase their art, entertain friends, and have visiting family to stay. Five metre high entertaining spaces are set at an elevated level to maximise views and natural light, opening seamlessly onto a terrace with lawn and a 21 metre infinity pool. A striated granite wall extends from inside to outside. Graphite render is capped by a continuous grey marble parapet band wrapping around the building. Full height openings incorporate sliding glazing and sliding slatted shutters, enabling solar shading and natural ventilation as required. Two storey family and guest wings are sunken into the remodelled hillside either side of the entertaining spaces in response to strict building code restrictions on site slope and building height, with the continuous parapet band maintaining a consistent horizontal roofline. A gym with a lap pool is carved into the hillside beneath the elevated infinity pool. A 30 metre long skylit entrance hall divides the entertaining spaces from the staff wing, with bedroom suites above a butler’s kitchen and laundry. The residence also contains a screening room and art studio, together with a three car garage, six additional parking spaces around the turning circle at the end of the drive, and the requisite service spaces.
